(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 11, 2006 ) Omaha, Neb. -– An extremely rare 1825 CA Argentine coin – one of only four known to exist – is one of about 400 coins in a numismatic sale being conducted by Hall’s Auction Company of Paris, Ill. Online bidding for the sale is being facilitated through Proxibid.com, based in Omaha. The auction concludes Sunday, May 14.

The coin, with a face value of one Real, the Argentine unit of currency, has been graded VF20 by the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS). To view it, log on at www.proxibid.com and follow the prompts to the Hall’s Auction page. Pictures and descriptions of all the lots are on view. The Argentine coin is lot # 1.

“This is an extremely rare coin and I assume it will be pursued by collectors anxious to have it,” said Fred Borgmann, New Issues Editor for Krause Publications, publishers of Numismatic News and U.S. Coin Digest. “Not counting this one, I know of only one other in private hands, plus one in a museum in Argentina.”
“I’ve had the opportunity to get the Argentine coin in front of a number of experts, and they all agree, this is the best example of an 1825 CA One Real they have ever seen,” said Scott Hall, owner of Hall’s Auction Company.

At press time, the high bid for the coin was $5,000. Borgmann said he expected further bids would easily top that, leading to the sale’s conclusion. “It’s been years since another one like it has come up for bid,” he said. This example is the only one ever to carry a PCGS grade, a fact that lends credence to its authenticity and value.

Another coin in the sale was actually carrying a higher bid at press time: $5,500, for an 1882-CC $20 Liberty gold piece (lot # 10). It carries an MS62 PL grading. Borgmann, looking in the 2006 edition of U.S. Coin Digest, said the same coin with an MS63 grade would be worth $25,000. “I’m not sure how much difference a point makes,” he said.

Other $20 Liberty gold pieces in the sale have already attracted keen bidder interest. They include an 1866-S (graded VF); an 1855-S (AU); an 1883-S (AU); an 1895 (AU); an 1876 (MS61); an 1876-S (MS62); an 1879-S (AU58); an 1890-S (AU58); an 1894 (MS 62); and a 1904-S (AU). At press time, all carried high bids of $650 or more.

The sale overall is a numismatist’s dream, featuring more than 100 PCGS coins; numerous gold pieces; more than 50 silver dollars; halves, quarters, dimes and nickels; Bust half dollars; large cents; Indian head pennies (including a rare 1909-S, the last year they were struck); key date coins; proof and mint sets; Early World coins; stock certificates; and Canadian coins.
