Emu Farmers Gear Up for National Emu Week
National Emu Week is May 6 through May 14
(EMAILWIRE.COM, April 18, 2006 ) San Angelo, TX -- Sponsored by the American Emu Association, National Emu Week (NEW) is a nine-day promotional event starting on the first Saturday and running through the second Sunday in May. During NEW, participating emu farms and state emu associations sponsor various activities within their communities to introduce consumers to emu related products. This year National Emu Week will run from May 6 through May 14.
“Emus produce nutrient-rich, Heart Healthy™ red meat high in protein but low in cholesterol and calories,” said Charles Ramey, American Emu Association President. “The oil produced by emus is used in health and beauty products.” In addition to meat and oil, the bird produces two kinds of leather. The durable body hide provides thin, supple leather used in clothing as well as fashion accessories. The thicker leg skins, or “leggings,” produce almost reptilian leather that is sturdy enough for hard-wearing items such as boots and belts, but also creates an interesting accent on clothing and accessories. Emu feathers are finding niches in a number of different industries, including the fashion, fishing, automotive and craft industries. The large green eggs are popular with egg artists, particularly those that carve or sculpt eggs because the shell has three layers of color: white, teal and a dark green outer coat.
According to NEW Chair Joylene Reavis of Wisconsin, there will be a lot of activities going on around the country. “Many of the farmers will be hosting open house, becoming guest speakers, or giving farm tours to schoolchildren, nursing home residents and the general public,” said Reavis. “Some farms are sponsoring community related events such as fundraisers or competitions.” Reavis went on to say that information on local NEW activities was available by contacting state emu association presidents.
