Elata Senses Launched - Enterprise Solution
elata senses controls the distribution of applications
(EMAILWIRE.COM, November 30, 2000 ) November 30th, 2000 - elata plc, a UK based software company, today announced the world-wide availability of elata senses, the first information management system for the distribution of content, applications, and data to a range of devices from WAP phones and PDAs to Desktop PCs.
elata senses enables the enterprise to centrally manage the provision of all types of content, from individual pieces of data to whole applications, to any user irrespective of the device they are using or their location. Additionally, elata senses mirrors an enterprise's business structure by creating a hierarchy of divisions, users and devices allowing targeted information to be delivered to the right individual at the right time.
elata senses is a direct response to the growing problem of managing multiple devices and the associated costs. It is estimated that in 2003 there will be approximately 1 billion mobile devices in circulation worldwide with a total cost of ownership to the enterprise exceeding £3,300 per user, per year. By deploying elata senses organisations will be able to significantly reduce their spend on managing mobile devices.
Matthew Dove, Market Development Manager at Symbian, said: "As more and more devices are standardised on the Symbian platform, the ability to manage varied enterprise content and applications becomes a mission-critical consideration. A solution such as elata senses is a vital component to ensure that an enterprise is put in complete control of its most valuable asset - information."
elata senses is platform independent, entirely Java based and has been designed to integrate seamlessly within an organisation's existing IT infrastructure. The software can manage a range of mobile devices plus desktop and server platforms and is independent of network technology.
Gavin Freed, CEO at elata said: "One of the biggest headaches facing IT managers in an enterprise is the increasing number of devices that they will be required to manage. elata senses addresses this problem to deliver a solution which puts the administrator in complete control of what, where, when and to whom information is communicated. There is no other framework available today that has either the level of function or scalability of elata senses."

About elata senses
elata senses, a platform independent framework, provides a unique mechanism for the automatic distribution, installation and removal of almost any kind of content, including applications, documents, video and data, without any user intervention. A system administrator uses the elata senses management tool to build a profile of content for each device or group of devices. At pre-determined intervals, a small piece of client-side code compares the current known profile against the profile stored in the server. Any new or updated content is automatically retrieved and installed, and any defunct content is removed. Unlike competitor offerings, elata senses is fully scalable, network independent and 3G GPRS/UMTS ready. There is no other framework available today that has either the level of function or scalability of elata senses.
elata senses has been developed to address the needs of:
- Enterprises - by mirroring the corporate structure, elata senses can manage the distribution of information to mobile devices, PC's and browsers giving the enterprise complete control of what applications are delivered to the workforce, and when.
- Network Operators - by allowing operators to provide tailored information, services and applications to GSM handsets, WAP phones, Symbian, Palm, and Java applications on MExE compliant handsets.
- Service Providers - by empowering service providers and giving complete control of the distribution channel of content and applications.
Content - refers to any kind of digital information that can be collected together and sent to a user. This could be a web page, a document, a telephone list or even a complete application.
Framework - a framework in this context means elata senses provides a mechanism to deliver content to users. This mechanism can be extended in many ways to deliver tailored solutions to business needs.
Devices - elata senses is not 'tied' to any hardware device or operating system. Content can be sent to anything from a simple cellular phone, a smartphone, a WAP enabled device, a personal digital assistant (PDA) a notebook or web browser on a desktop PC.
User Profiles - The content is sent to a user based on a profile set up by a system manager and is tailored to their personal requirements, allowing the precise targeting of information.

Notes to the editor:
As an example of an enterprise using elata senses, please see below:
A large utility company is using elata senses to manage applications and data for its mobile workforce. Every morning, service engineers connect to elata senses using a PDA and mobile phone to receive content updates.
The IT department has developed a new version of the service tracking application used by engineers to schedule customer visits and to record details of work carried out during these visits. This application is made available on the utility's intranet site, and details of the updated application are entered into elata senses.
An engineer connects to the elata senses server the next morning, automatically receives the new application and the old version is removed. Job records are also distributed and the engineer can check which locations he needs to visit. At these locations, he uses the new application to record details of time spent on each job, as well as parts required.
Next morning, he again connects to the elata senses server. This time, since he already has an up-to-date application, only the new jobs for the day are sent to him, but in addition, his completed visit records are automatically removed from his PDA and sent back to the utility's central database for processing, parts ordering and billing.
