EDWARDIAN CHRISTMAS CELEBRATIONS
(EMAILWIRE.COM, November 01, 2001 ) EDWARDIAN CHRISTMAS CELEBRATIONS
As part of Cadw’s 2001 events programme, Castell Coch will play host to two magical Edwardian Christmas weekends on December 1,2,8 and 9th. From the extravagantly bedecked Christmas tree to the traditional Christmas fare, prepared by the Castle’s very own ‘Mrs. Claus’, the events are guaranteed to get everyone into the festive spirit.
Mulled wine, mince pies and hot chestnuts will be served in the drawing room where an enormous Christmas tree will set the tone for the whole room, festooned with lavish decorations and lights, complemented by the Gothic grandeur of the castle.
From 12pm - 4pm every day, entertainment laid on will include period music to enhance the atmosphere of a century ago, with a ladies choir, local group Pavane, and the Tongwynlais silver band playing carols and period pieces. Caerphilly Players will also be on hand as various members of Lord Bute’s servants throughout the day.
A total of 14 local stallholders will also be entering into the Christmas spirit offering the highest quality local crafts and catering. Local crafts and skills on hand will include glassware and glass decorators, bric-a-brac, woodcarvers and cushion makers.
There will also be an opportunity for visitors to take a look around the Christmas workshop, see St. Nicholas’ helpers busily making last minute adjustments to toys and wrapping presents for the sack. Who knows the big man, Father Christmas, may after a mulled wine or two, regale you with a winter’s tale or two?
Paul Drake, of events company Allen Drake, which organises the events programme on behalf of Cadw, explains, “This is one of our favourite events to organise and one that always proves popular with the young and old alike. The aim of the events programme is to fire the imagination of visitors, and I’m sure the events will succeed in making visitors feel right at home in the warm turn of the century Christmas décor of the fairy tale castle,”
Entrance is as part of normal admission charge. More information can be received from Castell Coch on 02920 810101.
