Disney Auctions Lets the Dogs Out
Costumes From Walt Disney Pictures' 102 Dalmatians, Designed By Academy Award® Winner Anthony Powell, To Be Offered On Disney Auctions Presented By eBay
(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 21, 2001 ) Costumes were created for Cruella De Vil, portrayed by Glenn Close
This Academy Awards® Sunday, Disney Auctions will roll out the red carpet for the dogs, offering 102 Dalmatians fans a chance to own a movie costume designed by an Academy Award® winner. Beginning March 25, the day of the Academy Awards® telecast, Disney Auctions (www.disneyauctions.com), presented by eBay, will offer 10 costumes from Walt Disney Pictures' 102 Dalmatians. The costumes were created for Cruella De Vil, portrayed by Glenn Close, and were designed by Anthony Powell, who has won three Academy Awards and has been nominated a total of six times, most recently for his work on 102 Dalmatians.
The costumes that will be available include the following:
A tailored black and white top and column skirt finished with a large, dramatic spotted cape (with a "Zebra" lining). The ensemble is Powell's take on Cruella's "spotted" yet spotless alter ego, the deceptively reformed "Ella." "The secret of the black and white spotted outfit is that the inside of the cape is supposed to look like real fur, but in fact, it's fake," says Powell.
A one-of-a-kind coat made entirely from recycled materials. This is the coat that Close -- as the reformed "Ella" -- wears when she visits the Second Chance dog rescue home for the first time.
An original black and white faux fur 3/4-length checkerboard coat designed and dreamed up by Powell exclusively for a fashion show scene.
A one-of-a-kind "tiger" gown that is covered with blended light topaz, aurum and jet black "jewels" and sequins. The gown's neckline and hemline are festooned with a blend of black marabou, pheasant and gold Millard "feathers." Matching gloves complete the dress.
Powell received his first Academy Award® in 1972 for his work in Travels with My Aunt. That was followed in 1978 for his work on Death on the Nile and in 1981 with Tess. His unparalleled career in film and theater costume design has also garnered him numerous honors, including the highest honor from the Costume Designer's Guild's Lifetime Achievement Award this year. His long list of screen and stage credits include Hook, Pirates, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and Sunset Boulevard. Walt Disney Pictures once again "spot-lights" comedy, fantasy, and fun-filled adventure in the hit sequel to the 1996 box office blockbuster 101 Dalmatians.
