Convera Delivers 'Industry First' Security Features with Release of RetrievalWare(R) 6.9 Digital Content Management Solution

Cross-Repository Security Streamlines Access to Critical Information without Compromising Sensitive Data

(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 23, 2001 ) Convera (Nasdaq: CNVR), a leading provider of advanced technologies, products and solutions for managing multimedia digital content, on May 23 announced the release of Convera RetrievalWare 6.9, the latest version of its high-performance intelligent search and retrieval solution for indexing and searching a wide range of distributed text-based content. RetrievalWare 6.9 is the first search system to provide user- and document-level security simultaneously across all of the most important enterprise groupware and document management systems. "In speaking with our customer base about the management of digital assets, the need for advanced security features was a priority on their list," said Patrick Condo, president and CEO, Convera. "The latest release of our flagship product demonstrates Convera's ability to take the lead in fulfilling customer requirements and our continued commitment to delivering fast, accurate access to all digital content, from text to video, in a multitude of formats and languages, and across multiple systems." Cross-Repository Security One of the greatest challenges facing large organizations today is the distributed nature of information. In a typical Global 2000 organization, valuable knowledge resides in multiple repositories that typically include groupware and document management systems, each with its own set of user accounts, groups and access permissions. When knowledge workers need information, all too often they have to separately log in and perform a search in each system. With the release of RetrievalWare 6.9, Convera introduces the industry's only cross-repository search with full document-level security. With RetrievalWare's cross-repository search, a single user login can be authenticated to perform a simultaneous search across multiple document repositories using the access permissions granted by the native application. The search results will contain only those items that each searcher is permitted to view. Any changes to access permissions in any of the indexed repositories are immediately picked up by RetrievalWare so access is always up-to-date. This level of security is offered across Documentum, FileNET Panagon, Lotus Notes, Microsoft Exchange and the Windows NT file system. "One of the fundamental objectives of any information portal is to create a single point of access to all of an organization's knowledge assets," added Condo. "If searchers have to perform the online equivalent of unlocking every file cabinet in the office to uncover relevant documents, the portal is not living up to its promise. By integrating cross repository document-level security into the search capabilities of a portal, RetrievalWare 6.9 delivers a more complete search solution without sacrificing the integrity of sensitive data." Other significant enhancements in RetrievalWare 6.9 include:Enhanced Microsoft Exchange Security - Convera has extended the power of RetrievalWare searches across Microsoft Exchange documents by adding the security necessary to give access to critical organizational information without compromising security. For large organizations with multiple Exchange servers, RetrievalWare's security functionality enables users to search across all Exchange servers, thus providing users with access to all available information. General Availability of Specialized Medical and Pharmaceutical Search Aids - To address the needs of the knowledge-intensive medical and pharmaceutical industries, Convera has made extensions available to the general-purpose RetrievalWare Semantic Network that greatly enhances the precision and comprehensiveness of searches in these knowledge domains. These extensions make it possible to accurately search for information about drugs, diseases, medical conditions, and similar subjects using any combination of scientific, trade, medical or common terminology. Updated Platform and Third Party Support - RetrievalWare 6.9 has been certified on the following platforms: Windows NT 4.0 SP6A; Windows 2000 SP1; Sun Solaris 7 and 8; HP-UX 11 (32-bit and 64-bit); DEC Unix 4.0f; IBM AIX 4.33; SGI Irix 6.5; and RedHat Linux 6.1. This release also provides enhanced Web server support, native support for the industry's leading Relational Database Management Systems, and expanded certification and support for data synchronizers including: Lotus Notes R5; Documentum 4i; Exchange 5.5; Exchange 2000; FileNET Panagon 2000; and NCR Teradata.About Convera RetrievalWare Convera RetrievalWare is a high-performance intelligent search system that allows broad flexibility and scalability for implementation across corporate intranets and extranets.
