Clown 'High-Jacks' Downtown San Diego Financial District
(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 23, 2001 ) After a 20-year absence, a familiar face surprised workers in downtown San Diego this morning when the onetime icon of Jack in the Box(R) (NYSE: JBX) restaurants appeared atop the 34-story Copley Symphony Towers.
The occasion:
Jack in the Box Inc. was hosting its annual shareholders' meeting and celebrating its 50th anniversary in Copley Symphony Hall, 34 stories below. A fixture atop Jack in the Box restaurants since 1951, the clown head was removed from all buildings and drive-thru speaker boxes in 1980 as part of a marketing campaign promoting a shift toward more adult fare. Although the rooftop clown heads were thought destroyed long ago, this one had been stored in the rafters at California Neon Products, a San Diego company that manufactured the clown heads and still produces menu boards and signs for Jack in the Box. The resurrection will be short-lived, however, with the clown head remaining aloft only through the weekend. But company officials will offer Jack fans a closer look at the clown head when an exhibit of Jack in the Box memorabilia opens Aug. 1 at the San Diego Automotive Museum, commemorating the company's golden anniversary.
