'Chalk and Talk' Doesn't Work With Students of the Video Generation
New technologies change the way teachers teach and students learn
(EMAILWIRE.COM, October 13, 2002 ) -- "Chalk and Talk" won't cut it any more. Teachers can't just stand in front of a dusty chalkboard and lecture students of the video generation. Successful schools have learned how to use technology to improve instruction, motivate students, and ultimately help them increase academic achievement and be better prepared for today's world.
One example of a new and innovative technology being used schools all across the country is a videogame-based reading and math curriculum that runs on a PlayStation game console. Think of the typical videogames that children love, but take out the violence and add reading and math curriculum. Now make it run on either a computer or the PlayStation game console. The teacher uses the PlayStation in the classroom to instruct students on a selected objective, and then sends the appropriate CD home for the student to practice. That's right - homework on a PlayStation game console! The software - called Lightspan Achieve Now -- is developed by Lightspan, a San Diego- based educational technology firm. It's in more than 4,000 schools in 46 states and over 900 independent studies prove it helps improve academic achievement.
