Cadw Launches 2001 Events Programme

(EMAILWIRE.COM, April 27, 2001 ) Over the coming months the castles and abbeys of Wales will provide the dramatic backdrop for an action-packed events programme which celebrates a thousand years of Welsh history.

Organised by Cadw: Welsh Historic Monuments, 23 historic sites across Wales will play host to 112 individual events, ranging from outdoor plays, falconry displays and garden talks, to battle re-enactments featuring fifteenth-century style archers and medieval siege engines.

The season kicked off in dramatic style at CONWY CASTLE over the Easter weekend with the colourful re-enactment of the six hundredth anniversary of the storming of Conwy by Glyn Dðr’s supporters. The castle recorded its highest weekend attendance figures on record with over 8,000 visitors passing through the gates between Saturday and Monday and many more watching the parade as it passed through the town.

In south Wales a double anniversary at TINTERN ABBEY, the first Cistercian abbey to be founded in Wales, gives rise to two quite different events. On August 11 an afternoon of medieval-style music marks the seven hundredth anniversary of the completion of the abbey church.

One of the first medieval monuments to be brought into state care, Tintern celebrates a centenary in care this year.

On August 12, a Victorian picnic, complete with stalls and live music, marks the passing of this historic milestone. Visitors are invited to dress up for the event with prizes for the best Victorian outfit.

CAERNARFON CASTLE on May 6 & 7 and August 26 & 27 sees historic re-enactment groups the 23rd of Foot and the 47th of Foot present living history events focusing, respectively, on the Napoleonic and American War of Independence periods.

The recreated medieval pleasure garden at TRETOWER COURT near Crickhowell (2.15pm every Friday from June 1-August 3) provides the inspiration for resident gardener Francesca Kay’s entertaining talks on the gardening fashions and folklore of the Middle Ages.

CHEPSTOW CASTLE (7pm, July 13) is the historic venue for the first of 24 performances of Macbeth by the Wales Actors’ Summer Shakespeare Tour. Castles across Wales, including HARLECH and KIDWELLY, also play host to open-air performances of Shakespeare’s famous tragedy.

The internationally acclaimed theatre troupe Illyria, who took the prized critics choice for Shakespeare at the Edinburgh Festival 2000, will visit CILGERRAN CASTLE (7.30pm, August 8) for the first of three performances of Midsummer Night’s Dream.

The colour and spectacle of a medieval fayre comes to LAMPHEY BISHOP’S PALACE, Pembrokeshire, (12-4pm, August 8) where visitors can test their skills with a medieval broadsword while admiring the costumes, craft stalls, and displays of archery which evoke the era. The Palace is also the venue for Unexpected Echoes (July 16-August 17), a sculpture exhibition which sees local artists and craftspeople use architectural aspects of the building itself as a means of exploring the ideas of preservation and progress.

The year is 1075 at BEAUMARIS CASTLE (12-4pm, September 1 & 2) as living history group Cwmwd Iâl offer a taste of a medieval military encampment. Visitors are invited to wander through the encampment, watch displays of eleventh-century weaponry in action, or try their hand at the Welsh longbow.

Keith Allen of events company Allen Drake, which organises the events programme on behalf of Cadw, explains, “The aim of the events programme is to fire the imagination of visitors, helping them look anew at some of Wales’s most familiar ancient monuments.

“The wide variety of events will hopefully appeal to a broad audience, and we’re certain there’ll be something for everyone on this year’s programme.”
