Bush and Telecom
(EMAILWIRE.COM, November 15, 2004 ) CEDAR KNOLLS, NJ, November 15, 2004 President Bush's re-election will allow him and his team to focus on several key issues facing the telecom industry, with the most important one being the upcoming spectrum auctions for 3G and underutilized UHF channels.
"Huge amounts of spectrum are scheduled to be auctioned, probably in the 2006-8 time frame," said Allan Tumolillo, COO of Probe Financial Associates, "and if these come to pass, it will lay the foundation for the wireless future."
"The swift auctioning of 110MHz in 3G spectrum, 60MHz in UHF spectrum and as much as 276MHz in further UHF spectrum will completely change the nature of telecom" said Tumolillo. "The computer and IT industry sees its future tied in with wireless for netwoking, for communications, and for access to the Internet."
Whether the spectrum is used for cellular service, WiFi, WiMax or other technoogy-based services, what is important is that the spectrum up for auction is vastly more than has been used to date by the cellular industry. Of course, political issues could intervene and delay the auctions, but the Bush Administration has the opportunity to lay the foundation for a new telecom industry. How it proceeds with FCC appointmens is crucial.
PFA's new report, "Bush and Telecom" assesses issues facing the FCC and the Bush Administration in its second term.
