Building Stadiums With Better Security
(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 30, 2002 ) It's no surprise that security at sporting events has been beefed up since the events of September 11. Now architects are designing the newest stadiums specifically with safety in mind. Hence the 80 cameras, room full of corresponding monitors, 2,000 plus smoke detectors, an integrated lighting control system, and sixty card access checkpoints at Houston's brand new Reliant Stadium -- a facility touted not just as the most hi-tech stadium to enter the sports world but also the most secure.
Sports fans want to feel safe -- providing most of the game-time excitement themselves. The plan at Reliant Stadium is that the fans will be left to enjoy the stadium's wide aisles, seats with unobstructed views, luxury suites, and air conditioning that's designed to stay on even when the NFL's only retractable roof is opened! And all the while, the staff in the Control Center will be watching.
If something happens they can identify that and take care of the situation so it's not disruptive and no one will know it happened. This building from a technology standpoint had to be the premium of all buildings that are out there right now.
When the Texans kick off their pre-season on August 24th, it's not only fans in Houston who will be watching. The hope is that this stadium will become the model for sporting venues everywhere to help ensure that players and spectators have a fun and safe experience come game day.
