Breast Health

Bodywise Emporium

(EMAILWIRE.COM, June 20, 2005 ) Chatswood, Australia -- In the world of Lingerie, breast health appears to have taken a back seat to fashion's imperatives. Tight, inflexible bras have flooded the market in the endless search for cleavage. There's nothing wrong with wanting to look sexy, but at what cost to the body and the health of your breasts? We need to give our boobs a break occasionally and let them get on with their job. We need to consider breast health as well.

Breast Health explained:
What exactly is the lymphatic system?
Arteries and veins have built in mechanisms which facilitate flow. Your arteries have thick muscle walls wrapped around them which contract and expand to pump the blood away from the heart to all areas of the body. Your veins carry the blood back to the heart. Veins have valves which prevent 'back flow' of the blood.

The Lymphatic system picks up the plasma/fluids which are secreted by the arteries. Whenever you have exchange of materials between the arteries and the body tissue (i.e oxygen, iron, other nutrients) there is a small percentage of fluid which falls "through the cracks". This is picked up by the lymphatic system. Once the lymphatics collect all of these leftover bits, they carry them to the big junction of veins near the neck and then back into the heart.

Importance of Breast Health
The breast lymph requires the pumping action of three main muscles - Pectoralis Major, Pectoralis Minor and Serratus Anterior. As these muscles move they activate lymphatic flow. If you immobilize these muscles, you reduce flow and increase build up. If you have heavy breasts and poor posture, these muscles may shorten, (i.e. if you hitch you breasts up higher than they would naturally sit in order to minimize their size). When the muscles shorten they cannot fully contract and may therefore be unable to pump the lymphatic vessels effectively.

The breast lymph also relies on the pumping action of the ribcage created by the diaphragm which expands and contracts as you breathe. If the ribcage is restricted by a tight bra, the diaphragm cannot create the suction which is required to draw the lymphatic fluid back to the heart to be processed. So the more evenly the tension is distributed over the surface area of a bra and your breast, the better, as it will minimize the pressure on the chest and facilitate normal circulation of the veins, arteries and lymph fluid, not just in and around the breast, but around the entire body. This is what we mean by breast health.

Breast Health - what to avoid in a bra:
Heavy breasted women have always been told that they have to support their breasts properly. This usually means hitching them up to an unnatural level on their chest, (always with an underwire) which means that the weight is being sustained entirely by the shoulders and neck, instead of the back. Consequently, they often complain of referred neck pain and headaches. When women wear a Bodywise bra, it allows the breasts to sit in their best natural position, (without wire), being supported by the back instead of the neck. This is important for breast health.

The thinner the strap across your back, the greater the pressure on your shoulders to carry the weight of your breasts, and the more likely that the pectoral muscles will contract to compensate. Thin back straps usually ride up because they are being dragged by the weight of the breasts. This is not good breast health.

Breast Health - what to look for in a bra:
A good bra will distribute the weight and tension evenly throughout the entire chest area, both front and back, keeping breast health in mind. Wide contact across the back and sides, stimulates the rhomboid muscles to retract the shoulder blade and open up the front of the chest. This gently improves your posture.

The wide back should stay in place and maintain the even distribution of tension. The Pectoralis Major begins at the shoulders and moves down and across your chest to the sternum. The most effective support is achieved if the bra itself mimics this muscle's fibre direction, i.e if the bra sweeps down and across your chest instead of straight up and down. This way the bra is working with your body and breasts instead of against it, with breast health in mind. Bras which allow some movement in the breast, may help the lymphatic system do it's job. Bodywise bras are designed with all of these breast health considerations. They allow your body to function effectively and let you get on with your life without restriction.
