Breakthrough for ServiceFactory's Orbyte System in tough Japanese market

(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 14, 2003 ) ServiceFactory's Orbyte Wireless System for the development of services for the Internet and wireless LAN (WLAN) is being used for a pilot WLAN installation by one of Japan's biggest carrier, Poweredcom Inc. This deal is a direct result of the recently signed value-added reseller agreement with Nihon Unisys Ltd in Japan. It represents a major breakthrough for ServiceFactory into a huge market, and a major success in a tough business climate. Poweredcom will use Orbyte to develop services to sell to other enterprises operating as virtual ISPs.

Owned principally by Tokyo Electric Power Co., Ltd, (TEPCO) the world's biggest energy company, and Mitsui & Co., Ltd. and Mitsubishi Corporation, Poweredcom has a dominant position in the Tokyo market and beyond through its affiliation with TEPCO and its 76,000-kilometer optical fiber network. Poweredcom aims to become a wholesale ISP, offering its enterprise customers services that they can market and sell to their own groups of end users. Many enterprises are interested in the possibilities of offering WLAN services under their own brand, operating effectively as ISPs. For infrastructure owners like Poweredcom , the Orbyte system thus opens up a new source of revenue from their enterprise customers.

Spurred by the liberalization of Japan's telecommunication industry, Poweredcom was founded in 1986 as an electric power company affiliated carrier servicing the Tokyo Metropolitan Area, the political and financial centre of Japan. Its growing optical fiber network provides a solid base from which to provide enterprise customers with high-quality end-to-end services at low rates.

The Orbyte system has many functions and features that allow virtually unlimited customization of the look-and-feel of the user interface and log-in screen. These are very attractive features to enterprise customers as hotspot operators, who can include advertising and offer access to services in the login screen under their own brand to their own end users. Literally, the owner of the department store or other hotspot remains the master of his own business model for the hotspot.

With Orbyte, it's also simpler for anyone to sign up for and purchase WLAN access time via a web interface. Orbyte now also includes extended support for roaming between operators, making it easier for an operator's subscribers to connect up wherever they are.

Anders Emilsson Sales Manager for ServiceFactory in Japan says: "It's likely that in the highly competitive Japanese market we will see more wholesale ISPs and virtual ISPs coming onto the market. The Orbyte system is very attractive to this kind of customer. The system has an easy interface for customizing or creating completely new service components. This means virtual ISPs can limit user access to highly specific geographical coverage areas. The new system console makes it easier and simpler to design and distribute web user interfaces (such as session and login windows) right down to the level of the individual hotspot."
