Bill Richardson On Immigration

Democratic Party Presidential Candidate Bill Richardson, Governor of New Mexico, says he would allow current illegal immigrants to stay in the United States.

(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 27, 2007 ) Sacramento, CA - Democratic Party Presidential Candidate Bill Richardson, Governor of New Mexico, says he would allow current illegal immigrants to stay in the United States.

“I believe that it's important that we have three concepts,” says Richardson, “one, we need to secure our borders; two, an earned legalization plan - allow those that are here if they obey the laws, if they learn English, if they pass a background check, I believe what we can do is let them stay.”

President George W. Bush recently lost a bout to Congress to create an immigration plan that would essentially provide amnesty to the 12.5 million undocumented immigrants now living in the United States. Most of the Congressmen and Senators who opposed the President's proposal were Democrats and Republicans who feared losing political ground in their districts if they supported the plan.

“He's (Richardson) a border Governor,” adds California State Senator Denise Ducheny, Imperial Valley, who supports Richardson's Presidential bid for the Democratic Party. “He understands the needs of the economy and the workforce and the workforce value of this immigrant population. He gets it at a much better level than some of the others who say they support (immigration reform) sort of in a vague way, but don't have to live it day to day…”

“Let's have comprehensive immigration reform,” says Richardson, “let both parties stop acting politically and get something passed that affects a lot of the people in this country.”

Governor Bill Richardson provided www.CalMagazine.com an exclusive interview recently where he shared some of his views on key issues. The entire interview can be seen on a webshow entitled “The Latino Journal This Week” at www.calmagazine.com, Channel 1.
