Best Foot Forward at Caernarfon Castle

Napoleonic Re-enactment at Caernarfon

(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 02, 2001 ) Cardiff, South Wales, UK

World Heritage site Caernarfon Castle, hosts a historic weekend of fun and pageantry with the Royal Welch Fusiliers on Sunday 6th May and Monday 7th May, as part of the Cadw events programme 2001. The Kings Grenadier Company of the 23rd Regiment of Foot will entertain visitors, between 12-4pm, with re-enactment displays bringing the elaborate uniforms and weaponry of the Napoleonic era to life.

Formed in 1997, The Kings Grenadiers Company has 50 dedicated members, who specialise in the re-enactment of the period of 1808 and 1814, when the 23rd Regiment of Foot carried out many acts of gallantry.

The 23rd Regiment of Foot Royal Welch Fusiliers is the oldest Welsh infantry regiment in Wales. Founded in Ludlow in 1689, it is only one of five regiments in the British Army never to have been amalgamated. The Royal Welch Fusiliers have a distinction unique amongst the British Army, the right to wear the ‘Flash’ of five black ribbons on the collar, a relic of the days when soldiers wore pigtails.

Caernarfon Castle already has close ties with the Royal Welch Fusiliers, as home to its Regimental Museum, which has no fewer than 11 Victoria crosses awarded to the Regiment on display.

Over the coming months the castles and abbeys of Wales will provide the dramatic backdrop for an action-packed events programme which celebrates a thousand years of Welsh history. Organised by Cadw: Welsh Historic Monuments, 23 historic sites across Wales will play host to 112 individual events, ranging from outdoor plays to falconry displays and garden talks, to battle re-enactments featuring fifteenth century archers and medieval siege engines

Later in the summer the Royal Welch Fusiliers return to Caernarfon Castle on August 26th and 27th for a re-enactment of the American War of Independence on British soil.
