(EMAILWIRE.COM, August 21, 2006 ) KENT, CONNECTICUT - Noted abstract landscape painter Dennis Hartley will exhibit new oil paintings in a one-person show at The Morrison Gallery in Kent opening September 2nd and running through October 6th.

The exhibit will begin with an opening reception Sept. 2nd from 2-5 pm, with jazz by the Joe Beck Duo.

Dennis Hartley was born and raised in Southern California, received his degree in architecture from Arizona State University in 1972 and since then he was worn the hats of architect, designer, and builder. Early in his architectural career, he lived and worked in Paris and Lausanne, Switzerland eventually moving to the Pacific Northwest in 1977. His work as a furniture designer has been represented by major galleries and showrooms from coast to coast, as well as exhibited at the International Furniture Fair in New York City.

In 1998 he put aside other professional pursuits in order to paint full time. In addition to the Morrison Gallery in Kent, CT, he is currently represented by fine art galleries in his home state of Oregon, and Santa Fe, NM.

Of his painting, Mr. Hartley says: “One of my ongoing subjects for representation is the barn in the landscape, which for me represents the larger issue of the relationship of man and nature, the overriding theme of ancient Chinese painting. To me, these slowly aging icons of humble purpose possess a certain noble and monumental quality that transcends a sentimental viewpoint. I find that these 'non styled' structures of pure utility can be used as a neutral and malleable motif to explore various painterly themes and ideas of form, space, transparency, and duality.”
