(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 01, 2004 ) CEDAR KNOLLS, NJ - The European ethernet services market will grow to over $5 billion in revenue by 2008. In North America, the market will surpass $6.9 billion. A new report from Probe Group, "Ethernet Services in Europe" forecasts service provider revenues for ethernet services in Europe and North America and profiles carrier offerings.

Ethernet services in Europe are being launched by incumbent national carriers, competitive operators, as well as global and regional carriers. "Metro area networking is the key growth driver in the near term," comments John Marcus, Probe Group Vice President. "With metro services in place, the transparent local area network will then extend to the wide area, allowing growth to continue."

Enterprises have a long history of experience with Ethernet in the LAN and this has played a part where services have succeeded. "The ability to allow for bandwidth increases and decreases in 1Mbps increments, without adding new hardware, plays a big part," he concluded. The reduction in capital and operational costs associated with ethernet will also contribute to its success as an enterprise access tool.
