Almaguin Highlands: Ranked as one of the Top 10 Places to Snowmobile According to Supertrax Magazine
(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 01, 2006 ) Ontario, Canada -- Throughout Ontario there are countless areas that cater to the snowmobile enthusiast. Because snowmobiling is huge, the economic impact it has had in Canada is about six billon dollars a year. For this reason, a wide variety of businesses, in communities both large and small, rely on the dollars snowmobilers bring to their area every year to survive.
Over the last few years, Southern Ontario has suffered from an ever-shrinking snowmobile season. Winters are becoming milder, and the season is becoming shorter. The one thing that snowmobling requires is snow, and lots of it. The traditional regions of Muskoka and Haliburton have seen their snowmobling seasons almost cut in half. Snowmobile owners have a substantial investment in their machines and related equipment; as a result, they want to use their machines as much as possible.
An Ontario snowmobile area that is not particularly well known, the Almaguin Highlands, is located approximately two and a half hours north of Metropolitan Toronto and only a few miles farther up Highway 11 from Muskoka. The Almaquin Highlands is developing a reputation for its super snowmobiling conditions. Supertrax magazine lists the region as one of the top ten places to snowmobile. Local businessman, Michael Piraino, owner of Northridge Inn & Resort (http://www.northridgeinn.com), enthusiastically promotes the region as “one of Ontario’s premiere winter destinations… great snow and the best snowmobiling trails in Ontario’s Near North.”
The Almaguin Highlands offers hundreds of kilometers of groomed snowmobile trails. The Almaguin trail system boasts a mixed riding experience with scenic tree-lined trails, frozen lakes and breath-taking views of snow-clad hills and valleys. Most importantly, the Almaguin Highlands is blessed with an abundance of snow. During the last few winters, when other areas had pulled in their groomers, the Almaguin region was knee-deep in snow.
A part of the Near North Trail Association that boasts 3500 kilometers of groomed trails and dubs itself the “Greatest Snow on Earth,” the Almaguin Trail System is close enough to Toronto for snowmobilers to make day trips to the snow. Alternatively, many types of accommodations can be found to provide a “base camp” for more extensive forays into the extensive Ontario snowmobiling trail system, including full-service resorts.
Northridge Inn & Resort, located at the southern edge of the Almaguin Highlands, is a full service resort that is a favorite with snowmobilers. It was voted one of the “Top Ten Inn/Resort Destinations in Ontario” according to Toronto Life Magazine. Northridge Inn not only offers its guests luxurious accommodations and gourmet dining at a reasonable price but also attracts a large snowmobiling cliental by providing what they want--direct access to the trails from their accommodations and secured sled parking. Sled rentals, as well as snow passes, parts and gas are also available to be had, close-by.
If the winters in Southern Ontario continue to shorten, traditional snowmobiling areas such as Muskoka and Haliburton will see less and less snowmobile traffic. They will lose the business to lesser-known areas such as the Almaguin Highlands, where snow can always be relied on. Ranking in the top 10 snowmobiling locations according to Supertrax Magazine is quite an accomplishment, and it won’t be too long before the Almaguin Highlands will be the premiere snowmobile destination in Ontario.
