ANS Announces Full U.S. Release of New Spinal Cord Stimulator to Control Pain
Advanced medical device offers remote control pain relief for patients
(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 20, 2002 ) Advanced Neuromodulation Systems, Inc. (ANS, NASDAQ: ANSI) announces today the full U.S. release of the GenesisTM Implantable Pulse Generator (IPG), which uses new spinal cord stimulation technology to manage chronic pain. Released on a limited basis in the fourth quarter of 2001, the Genesis medical device is now available nationwide. Like a cardiac pacemaker uses electrical impulses to regulate the heartbeat, the Genesis system transmits low-level electrical impulses to the spinal cord to modify pain signals. The electrical impulses change pain messages sent to the brain, often replacing the pain with a tingling sensation. The Genesis system is a breakthrough in pain therapy, with a multi-program "remote control" for patients that allows them to actively and accurately manage their pain therapy. Dr. Giancarlo Barolat, a pioneer in the field of neurostimulation, was among the first physicians to implant the Genesis IPG system. Dr. Barolat completed the procedure for a 23-year-old woman at the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia to treat the patient's severe chronic pain. "The Genesis system is a major advancement in terms of giving patients control of their pain," said Dr. Barolat. "The chronic pain patient may experience changes in pain intensity and patterns. Genesis allows the patient to alter the stimulation as needed for more targeted relief." The Genesis IPG system can be used to manage many types of chronic pain, including pain of the trunk and/or limbs, unilateral or bilateral pain associated with failed back surgery syndrome and low back and leg pain. The Genesis IPG features the following breakthroughs in spinal cord stimulation:Totally implantable, compact design for patient comfort and convenience. Small remote control type device patients can use to change "stimulation prescriptions" to match current activity or pain level. Advanced battery technology that allows the implant to last longer without an increase in size and weight. "ANS is devoted to developing new devices for the successful treatment of chronic pain," said ANS Chief Executive Officer Chris Chavez. "With Genesis, we are offering advanced, minimally invasive technology and the widest range of stimulation options for doctors and pain patients alike." About Chronic Pain Chronic intractable pain is the most common use for neuromodulation therapy using electrical stimulation. More than 50 million Americans currently are estimated to suffer from chronic pain, and many are partially or totally disabled. Americans now spend more than $100 billion annually in combined direct and indirect costs to deal with chronic pain. About Advanced Neuromodulation Systems Advanced Neuromodulation Systems (ANS) designs, develops, manufactures and markets implantable systems used to manage chronic intractable pain and other disorders of the central nervous system.
