AMERIGROUP Corporation's Chairman and CEO Appointed to AAHP Board of Directors
(EMAILWIRE.COM, June 20, 2001 ) VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.--The American Association of Health Plans (AAHP) has appointed Jeffrey L. McWaters, CEO and chairman of AMERIGROUP Corporation, to its board of directors. McWaters will join 41 nationally-recognized leaders in the health plan community to provide overall leadership within the association for its public policy, advocacy, education, community and quality of care activities.

McWaters’ appointment is for a two-year term, concluding in 2003. He previously served on AAHP’s Policy Board.

With more than 20 years of managed care experience, McWaters has proven himself as a leader in organizing patient-focused service companies. In 1994, he founded AMERIGROUP Corporation and established a new niche in the managed care industry, health care coverage focused solely on lower-income and uninsured families and persons with disabilities. Under his leadership, AMERIGROUP has grown to a multi-state operation with nearly 400,000 members.
Prior to AMERIGROUP, McWaters served as president and CEO for Options Mental Health (now Value Options). In this capacity, he developed Options into a national behavioral health managed care company serving millions. He formerly held senior executive positions with CIGNA Healthcare and EQUICOR, where he developed or operated 33 separate HMOs nationwide over a 14-year period. His career began as a health care auditor with Ernst & Young.
McWaters currently serves on the Boards of Psychiatric Solutions, Inc. and America Services Groups, Inc. (NASDAQ: ASGR). He is also actively involved with the Boards of International Students Inc., William & Mary, School of Business Administration, Monarch Bank and Envest Capital.
In 2000, Virginia Governor James Gilmore appointed him to the Board of Visitors for the College of William and Mary. McWaters was named the 1999 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year for Virginia.
He earned his bachelors of science in accounting from the University of Kentucky. McWaters currently resides in Virginia Beach, Va.
