AMCC Expands Product Portfolio With an Integrated Switching, Network Processing and Traffic Management Solution for Multi-Gigabit WAN Edge Applications

Building upon the popularity of the nP3400 for service provider applications, the nP3404 provides four gigabit ports for maximum flexibility and performance

(EMAILWIRE.COM, June 18, 2001 ) Applied Micro Circuits Corporation, Switching and Network Processing Group (AMCC) [NASDAQ:AMCC] announced a highly integrated single-chip solution for multi-gigabit packet processing in service provider applications. Combining AMCC's market-leading nPcoreTM-based network processing technology with traffic management, search engine, switching, and MAC capabilities on one software-programmable chip with four flexible, gigabit-rate ports, the nP3404 is optimized for a wide variety of WAN edge applications such as edge routers, high-speed IP access solutions for multi-tenant and multi-dwelling units, voice gateways, and VPN boxes. This device builds upon the success of AMCC's popular nP3400 integrated network processing solution in a variety of high-density Fast Ethernet applications for service provider WAN access platforms.

AMCC's complete nP and nPX families offer software-programmable network processor scalability to and beyond 10 Gbps line rates, terabit aggregate switching capacities, and advanced traffic managers supporting hundreds of thousands of Quality of Service (QoS) queues for fine-grained service provision. The nP3400/04 platforms combine the best of these nP and nPX family technologies into highly integrated, single-chip solutions optimized for both standalone and line-card service provider applications.

"Leveraging our success with the nP3400, we were able to implement yet another highly integrated device optimized for WAN edge applications," said Keith Morris, director of product management for AMCC's Switching and Network Processing Group. "The nP3404 combines maximum performance and port flexibility with low power and a small footprint, further demonstrating our unparalleled third-generation expertise in addressing customer needs with superior network processing, switch fabric, and traffic management solutions."

The nP3404 integrated network processor combines:

Two patented, Network-optimized Instruction Set Computing (NISC) nPcoresTM, offering 12-million packets-per-second, fully software-programmable packet processing capabilities
A nine Gbps switch fabric capacity
An on-chip Policy Engine classification and search coprocessor to enable policy-based network services
Gigabit Ethernet MAC functions
Four flexible 1.1 Gbps port interfaces that can optionally utilize the on-chip Gigabit Ethernet MAC or interface with either Packet-Over-SONET (POS) framers or fabric/ backplane logic
A low power, reduced board space, single-chip package
The nP3404 is complemented by AMCC's nPsoftTM development environment, including macro assembler and C/C compiler, symbolic debugger, simulator, and off-the-shelf software libraries for switching and routing applications.

Pricing and Availability

The nP3404, packaged in a 596-pin EDHS BGA, is currently sampling. The device is priced at $170 in volume quantities.
