A New View of Ground Beef: You Don't Have to Go 'Cold Turkey' on Taste!

download

(EMAILWIRE.COM, October 22, 2002 ) SUGGESTED ANCHOR LEAD: If you've gone "cold turkey" from eating ground beef because you think ground turkey is a healthier option, think again! As Matt Kelly tells us, new data from the US Department of Agriculture gives us plenty of healthy reasons to enjoy ground beef. (:60)

SCRIPT: We've got news for the many Americans who love the taste of ground beef but have switched to ground turkey for health reasons. After nearly two decades, the US Department of Agriculture has updated its ground beef data to show that ground beef can be just as low, or lower, in fat and calories than ground turkey. In fact, a three-ounce serving of 95% lean ground beef contains only five grams of fat and 139 calories, while the same portion of ground turkey contains eleven grams of fat and 200 calories. Mary K. Young, Registered Dietitian and Executive Director of Nutrition for the National Cattlemen's Beef Association.

CUT (Young): This new information empowers people to make informed choices in the grocery store and also enables them to feel good about eating ground beef. Not only is beef a lean, healthy and tasty meal option, but it remains an excellent source of essential nutrients, such as zinc, iron, protein and many B-vitamins.

SCRIPT: The new data also shows that 95% lean ground beef meets the USDA guidelines for lean. So if you've gone "cold turkey" on ground beef for health reasons, you've got plenty of reasons to switch back. I'm Matt Kelly.

SUGGESTED ANCHOR TAG: You can find more information about the nutritional benefits of beef by visiting the beef website at www.beef.org.

Beef industry new product efforts are funded by America's Beef Producers through their $1-per-head beef checkoff program and are managed for the Cattlemen's Beef Board and state beef councils by the National Cattlemen's Beef Association. The national beef checkoff is administered by the Cattlemen's Beef Promotion and Research Board. This 110-member board is appointed by the Secretary of Agriculture to oversee the collection of the $1-per-head beef checkoff, certify state beef councils, implement the provisions of the Federal Order establishing the checkoff and evaluate the effectiveness of the checkoff programs. Producer-directed and consumer-focused, the National Cattlemen's Beef Association is the trade association of America's cattle farmers and ranchers, and the marketing organization for the largest segment of the nation's food and fiber industry.
