Online Courses For Website Reports Open-Courseware Fuels Non Profit Online Schools with Free Online Education

(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 27, 2012 ) Los Angeles, California -- It was a year ago since professors from Stanford University taught free classes. Today several new companies and non-profit organizations have launched online courses that are either free or absolutely just next to none.

One year ago, Computer Science professor Sebastian Thrun and his colleague Andrew Ng taught artificial intelligence and machine learning respectively via the Internet for free. The project attracted thousands of students – Professor Thrun’s class had more than 160,000 students in attendance while Professor Ng’s class had an attendance of more than 100,000 students.

When the project was being discussed with the higher ups in Stanford, it would appear that the university officials were going to turn down the project but the officials recoiled and at least allowed certificates to be awarded to students with the professor’s name on it but not the university’s.

That is basically the picture today where traditional universities are trying to slow down the process of a new and upcoming trend in education. The Internet has been notorious to have made news completely free and today’s music quite affordable. If these new education related companies are successful, they may be on the verge of lowering the cost of one of the most expensive commodities in the world – a college education.

It should be noted that education is a right according to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights Article 26 and the International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural rights Articles 13 and 14. The fulfillment of such rights should be made in the framework of what is known as the four A’s: Availability, Accessibility, Acceptability, and Adaptability. In the implementation of this basic human right, the state itself is seen as the chief provider for the citizens.

Emerging new companies have now come up to do the exact opposite that traditional universities are doing, which is to provide education for free – or at least next to none. Examples of which are non profit institutions such as Saylor.Org, Peer to Peer University, and University of the People.

Support for such initiatives is provided by other foundations such as the Hewlett Foundation, Mozilla, and the Clinton Global Initiative. The interesting twist to these developments however is that the content for the courses offered by these institutions come from some of the top traditional universities like University of California (Berkeley), MIT, University of Michigan, and Tufts.

The stake upon which traditional universities are providing in this endeavor may also benefit the traditional university itself eventually. The material and available online courses that such institutions have put in is now known as open-courseware, MIT being the pioneer in the effort. To date, there are around 250 educational institutions around the world who have contributed to these online courses.

These materials, though at times are provided to students on the Internet for free, are a way to promote the university or college that provided it. For example, MIT were able to obtain new freshmen enrollees who have previously accessed open-courseware. The said students say that the material they were able to access convinced them to pursue their college education in MIT.

The scuffle between traditional universities and new institutions for learning will still linger for quite some time. The free content institutions are on their way making new credentials that their students can present to employers. Nevertheless, there’s still a long way to go.
