InsuranceMotorcycleQuote.com Reports That 30 States Need All-Rider Motorcycle Helmet Laws

A new report published by the Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety has found that 30 states need better helmet safety laws.

(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 24, 2012 ) Asheville, NC - A new report by the Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety suggests that law makers in 30 states need to have their heads checked since so far they have failed to pass all-rider motorcycle helmet laws. The ninth annual report also graded each of the U.S.’s 50 states along with the District of Columbia on whether or not they have enacted 15 basic traffic safety laws.

The most recent report argues that the passing of these 15 laws will save states money and lives. Jacqueline Gillan, president of Advocates that is a coalition of insurance, consumer, health, safety and law enforcement organizations working together as a proponent for state and federal highway and vehicle safety laws, programs and policies, said, "If states want to save lives and save money, they should look to the 2012 Roadmap to State Highway Safety Laws for guidance. This report shows that too many states have unacceptable and deadly gaps in their traffic safety laws. Political leadership and action are needed now."

According to the report, vehicle accidents cost America about $230 billion, close to 33,000 lives and more than 2 million injured each year.

In addition to the all-rider helmet law, the Advocates basic legislation wish list includes laws regarding seat belt usage, teen drivers, texting bans and impaired driving. Earning a green ranking, the report’s highest, were D.C. and these 17 states: Delaware, Maine, Minnesota, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Louisiana, California, New Jersey, Oregon, North Carolina, New York, Illinois, Washington, Georgia, Kansas, Maryland and Michigan. Conversely, the states ranked red, the worst possible, are Virginia, Montana, Nebraska, Ohio, Wyoming, South Dakota, Arizona, and Mississippi. The remaining states earned a yellow ranking.
