(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 31, 2012 ) Sacramento, California -- The majority of Americans have kept the tradition of giving greeting cards alive in the previous year. This is according to a survey conducted by the Opinion Research Corp. The statistics show that 83 percent of Americans still hold to the said tradition.
Statistics show that more Americans still prefer to send greeting cards instead of just using e-mails or other newer modes of communication. Experts believe that sending a greeting card is a more personal way of communication. It’s something tangible thus it becomes more meaningful as some would say. Nevertheless, there are pros and cons when discussing this facet of the greeting card industry.
Of course, the survey also probed the respondents as to why some of them no longer prefer sending greeting cards in today’s digital age. The biggest reason why some people no longer want to use greeting cards is that they no longer have the time to bother with one. This accounted for 32% of the respondents in the aforementioned survey who preferred not to send greeting cards in 2011.
The second highest reason why some people turn away from greeting cards is the cost of purchasing one, which also grabs 32 percent of the people who answered in the negative. Note that paper greeting cards usually cost from 50 cents to about 10 dollars a piece. The next highest reason why some people don’t want to send greeting cards is that they can’t find the address of the one they need to send it to.
The results of this survey are a bit of good news for greeting card makers who are combating decline in the number of sales that has now lasted for several years. The sales volume for the entire industry has gradually gone down in recent years. For example, Christmas card sales in 1995 reached up to 2.7 billion greeting cards exchanging hands. In 2011, that number of cards sold during the holiday season has been reduced to 1.5 billion greeting cards.
Everything seems to remain steady in spite of the many challenges that the entire greeting card industry is facing. The coming of the Internet age, the rise of social networking sites, competition brought in by e-cards, and the influx of custom card services have contributed to the decline in traditional greeting card sales. The decline is steady but it is indeed slow.
One expert notes that although the new Internet based communication systems are better at transmitting information, paper greeting cards on the other hand are far better at conveying people’s emotion. This simply means that greeting card makers can make a come back in the years to come.
