(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 21, 2012 ) New York, NY -- A report issued last week by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows rates for binge drinking significantly higher than what was previously thought.

In its report, the CDC found that over 38 million individuals within the United States are binge drinking at least four times each month with eight drinks, on average, being consumed each time. What’s more alarming is that adults 65 years of age and older are also binge drinking more, an average of five to six times each month.

“Consuming alcohol in great quantities is risky behavior,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “Alcohol is addictive, and increased consumption and frequency results in an increased possibility for addiction. It’s important that we educate the public on not only the acute dangers of binge drinking, but also the long-term consequences of doing so.”

Binge drinking, as defined by the CDC, is the consumption of more than five drinks for men and more than four drinks for women, in one sitting. The report showed that a high frequency of binge drinking occurs in households with an income of greater than $75,000, but that the highest number of drinks consumed per episode is greatest among individuals living right at, or below, the poverty level. That particular demographic is shown to consume eight to nine drinks per occasion.
