Philippine Relief Efforts Conducted by Members of Online Forum DumagueteInfo.com
Relief efforts are ongoing as forum members of dumagueteinfo.com coordinate and organize and get things done 24/7. Tropical Storm Sendong ravaged the Southern Philippines including Dumaguete City.
(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 13, 2012 ) Dumaguete, Philippines –– Ongoing relief efforts are being conducted by members and administrators of an online forum dedicated to Dumaguete City. The city along with the rest of the Southern Philippines were devastated by Tropical Storm Sendong (international name: Washi) on December 16, 2011.
The aftermath of the ravaging power of Tropical Storm Sendong has left hundreds of Dumaguete’s Citizens without a roof over their head or even anything to keep them alive. Many were reported either dead or missing as flash floods rose to alarmingly destructive heights. Many of the homes all around the city were swept clean leaving the former owners destitute even of a fresh shift of clothes.
Many of the victims were poor to begin with. And since all their belongings were washed away in the devastating floods and storm, they are left in shock only hoping that anyone would come along and provide needed help.
That was the exact response provided by members of an online forum, DumagueteInfo.com. The day following the ravages of the storm, an announcement was posted on the community website announcing relief efforts to be conducted commencing that moment. Funds were diverted and donations were solicited from forum members and other readers of the said online forum.
Everything was quickly organized although it can be easily admitted that the forum members can’t provide all the needs of flood victims. Members and moderators of the site and leaders of the local organization the Thursday Club have kept everything running 24/7.
One forum member comments on the timeliness of such events:
“As the stories kept coming in of the horrendous loss of life and possessions in our community, I couldn’t help thinking how unfortunate for this to happen so close to Christmas. And yet, perhaps if something like this must happen, it is good that it happens now in this season where so many of us will be giving and receiving gifts that we may not need and eating huge meals that make us fatter - for us to pause and give what we can and maybe even forgo some of the gifts or meals to help out those truly in need. This, I think, is as close as we can come to the real spirit of Christmas.”
A huge portion of the goods and funds received goes to the children. Nevertheless, certain measures have been made to ensure that the help the organization is providing does go to the people who really need them the most. They also coordinate their efforts with other organizations both private and government.
Photographs and videos of the disaster and the current relief effort are posted on the website as well. One forum member even thinks that the pictures posted on the forum sends a clearer and louder message than any of the words they have ever entered there.
