(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 10, 2012 ) Dumaguete, Philippines –– Expatriates and other concerned individuals are currently conducting ongoing relief efforts to help the families who were badly affected by a recent tropical cyclone that hit the Philippine Islands particularly in the city of Dumaguete. They call for more help as the needs of people who were left destitute by the recent typhoon still need to be met.
Tropical storm Washi (PAGASA name: Sendong) caused major damages to life and property in the southern Philippines on December 16. The storm triggered flash floods that wiped out entire communities in the Dumaguete City and the rest of the country including Cagayan De Oro and Iligan City. The death toll in the entire country was pegged at more than 1,200 fatalities with more than a thousand others still reported missing.
Right after the storm hit Dumaguete City the online community of DumagueteInfo.com announced an urgent plea for their members to pitch in the effort to raise funds and collect goods to be donated to locals who were devastated by the recent storm.
Part of the announcement in their online forum dated December 17, 2011 read as follows:
“There was no time to discuss this with all concerned because the urgent need is NOW, and hopefully the kids will have a replacement set of clothing tomorrow (Sunday). I appreciate all the generous donations that have been made to our Christmas Fund and the hospital gift bags are almost complete. Therefore I hope that no-one has any objections, and everyone approves, to us diverting some of the remaining funds to try and ease the pain being felt today by some destitute families.
Thanks in advance.
Roger”
Rudolf Brust, one of the administrators of the online forum expressed the breadth of the urgent needs they are filling:
“The focus of the Thursday Club is on the Kids and we decided to go to Batinguel where plenty of families are homeless and now stay at the emergency shelters at the Elementary School there and the Barangay Hall and Chapel.
Many of the people there have not much or nothing left. If you guys/girls have something left, you can be sure it goes to the right people. 1 kilo of chicken/beef soup is 250 peso and makes 50 liter, imported milk powder is less than 100 peso and feeds the youngest.
They really need all help they can get, from blanket to plastic chairs to cloth to food...
We can't bring their houses back, but looking into the big eyes of a poor, little child chewing some chocolate is definitely a better feeling than the buffet on a Christmas-party....”
The same Rudolf Brust was featured in a German newspaper where he reports the recent tragic events in Dumaguete and the current relief efforts being made. The newspaper report can be found here: http://www.bild.de/news/leserreporter/ueberschwemmung/leser-reporter-hilft-flut-opfern-auf-den-philippinen-21654036.bild.html.
The group is currently undertaking a huge effort to provide relief for people in need ever since the announcement was made. Other members of the group have even contributed man hours with some working round the clock to keep things going.
Many of their members have shared the tender feelings that such an effort brings. One forum member even comments:
“How great can a forum be.
We can fight here, sometimes have arguments, and whatever, but how proud I am now to be a member of this forum and see what people can do for each other and are a team to help people who need our help so much.
Great job of everyone who are giving a helping hand, time, and money.”
The group is still soliciting the aid anyone who is willing to send help to the victims of Typhoon Sendong in Dumaguete City. Those who are willing to send help or want more information about the said relief efforts may visit the forum at http://www.dumagueteinfo.com/board/dumaguete-city/emergency-help-thursday-club-9893.html.
