OAI: Weather Forecasts Should Have Drivers Reconsidering Auto Insurance Choices
Motorists living in states with harsh winters may want to weigh the benefits of adding comprehensive and collision to a policy. They're first-party coverages that could prove invaluable after an at-fault accident on an icy road.
(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 28, 2011 ) La Crosse, MN -- With state officials in the nation’s colder climes urging motorists to stay safe this winter, Online Auto Insurance (OAI) points out that drivers should protect themselves financially — as well as physically—as temperatures continue to drop.
Snow and ice can create hazardous driving conditions that lead to crashes, injuries and even death. And the financial fallout of winter weather can be serious, particularly for consumers with policies that do not cover vehicle owners for the different types of damage that can be caused by severe weather. To find out how much it would cost to add such coverage, readers can get free auto insurance quotes without personal information required for estimates.
Winter officially started this year on Dec. 22, and meteorologists are predicting below-average temperatures across much of the country, especially in Midwestern states including Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa and parts of Illinois.

Officials in Minnesota, Delaware and other states have cautioned motorists to make sure their vehicles—and their vehicle coverage—will take care of them in the event of winter storms.
According to the Insurance Information Institute (III), those storms are the third-largest cause of weather-related catastrophe losses, behind only hurricanes and tornadoes for the degree of economic damage inflicted.
Insured losses from storms last winter added up to $2.6 billion, according to a report issued in January by Munich Re.
Standard vehicle and homeowner policies cover many of the damages—including shattered windshields and burst pipes—that result from snow storms and other frigid events. But motorists may require optional collision coverage to protect themselves financially against multiple-car accidents caused by snow- and ice-covered roads or by crashing into a tree or other object.
And comprehensive coverage may be the only type that will foot the bill for losses caused by high winds, falling tree limbs and similar acts of nature. Like collision coverage, comprehensive is optional and it usually costs a bit more, but industry experts say the peace of mind it can bring may more than outweighs the additional expenditure.
