United States Joint Committee Wants Limit on the Use of Vaginal Mesh Products
A Joint Committee issued by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the American Urogynecologic Society (AUGS) recommends limiting the use of vaginal mesh to high-risk women only.
(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 21, 2011 ) LegalView, a leading online legal resource, supports a Joint Committee Opinion issued by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the American Urogynecologic Society (AUGS) which recommends limiting the use of trans vaginal mesh to high-risk women.
Vaginal mesh is a surgical device implanted in women who have experienced a pelvic organ prolapse or suffer from incontinence, yet for most women, mesh complications may cause additional problems. High-risk women who receive the treatment, however, may experience benefits that outweigh the potential risks of vaginal mesh.
Additionally, the Joint Committee recommends the creation of a national registry that tracks the outcome for all patients who undergo a vaginal mesh procedure.
The ACOG and AUGS reviewed several case studies and randomized trials which examined the nature and number of vaginal mesh complications used to treat a pelvic organ prolapse (POP). The two agencies found that nearly 20 percent of POP repairs involving this device may result in mesh erosion. Mesh erosion is a common complication where the mesh erodes into surrounding tissues which makes the device very difficult to remove.
In July 2011, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a formal warning to health care professionals advising them to consider alternative treatments to vaginal mesh. The Joint Committee Opinion echoes the FDA warning. The FDA issued its first communication regarding the dangers of vaginal mesh in 2008 and since then, the agency has continued to review the safety of the device.
As a consortium of personal injury lawyers specializing in vaginal mesh cases, LegalView is committed to keeping the general public up-to-date on the safety and effectiveness of vaginal mesh.
Vaginal mesh complications include severe pain, infection, bleeding, painful urination, painful sexual intercourse, mesh shrinkage, and most commonly, mesh erosion. This occurs when the mesh erodes into surrounding tissues. Many women who experience these symptoms need several corrective surgeries; however, since the mesh is designed to grow around human tissue it is very difficult to remove.
Vaginal mesh is used to treat a pelvic organ prolapse. Pelvic organ muscles may become weakened due to a hysterectomy or multiple childbirths, which cause the pelvic organs to slip out of place and bulge into the vagina. The most common organ to do this is the bladder. Vaginal mesh is synthetic mesh that holds these organs in place and is supposed to prevent future occurrences of prolapse or incontinence. However, the recent reports have found that the benefits may not outweigh the costs for most women.
Due to the rising number of complications, some of which may be life-long, many women have filed lawsuits against vaginal mesh manufacturers. According to Bloomberg, manufacturers collectively face more than 600 such lawsuits.
