Law Will Provide Greater Access to Low-Cost CA Auto Insurance
The California Low Cost Auto Insurance program had more than 11,500 participants at the end of 2010
(EMAILWIRE.COM, October 11, 2011 ) Los Angeles, CA -- A new California law will make it easier for residents to purchase insurance through a government-run program that provides bare-bones policies to low-income drivers.
The law will make it so that residents will be able to apply for and buy auto insurance online through the program. Currently, residents must locate agents that are authorized to sell low-income policies and apply through them.
The legislation will prompt state agencies to work together to develop guidelines on how to sell policies online, as well as how to verify information like driver’s license status.

Consumer advocates say that will remove hurdles which have made it difficult for those who are trying to do the right thing by being insured but have little money.
Policies issued through the program cost between $248 and $358 a year, depending on which county the policyholder lives in.
To qualify for the program, an applicant must have a household income that is at or below 250 percent of the federal poverty level. According to the most recent information, that is $27,225 for a one-member household. The threshold is increased by $9,550 for every member after the first.
Enrollees in the program are also required to be good drivers. Qualified applicants have no more than one point on their driving records, have been licensed for the past three years and drive a car worth less than $20,000.
Insurance issued through the program is actually below what the state typically requires motorists to carry. Liability coverage—which pays for other people’s damages that were caused by the policyholder—provided through the program affords the policyholder a total of $20,000 for bodily injury damages and $3,000 for property damages per accident.
These low-income policies provide $12,000 less coverage than a standard minimum policy.
