Auto Insurance Co. Ranks Cities by Drivers' Likelihood of Crashing
According to claims data from Allstate, motorists in Washington, D.C., are most likely to file a property damage claim.
(EMAILWIRE.COM, September 06, 2011 ) Practically all of the top auto insurance companies across the country use where a person lives to help determine how much to charge him or her for coverage, which could be either good or bad news for car owners living in the cities ranked in Allstate’s latest “America’s Best Drivers Report.”
The report ranks U.S. cities based on how frequently resident policyholders filed property damage claims with the insurer.
Fort Collins, Colo., was the most crash-free of the 200 largest cities, according to the report. Drivers in that city were likely to file an insurance claim once every 14 years, which is 28.6 percent better than the national average of once every 10 years.
"We want to recognize the city of Fort Collins for again being the safest driving city in America," Mike Roche, executive vice president of Allstate’s claims organization, said in a news release.
Other cities that compared favorably against the rest of the country included Boise, Idaho (25.5 percent less likely); Lincoln, Neb. (22.7 percent); Chandler, Ariz. (20.4 percent); and Huntsville, Ala. (18.9 percent).
But the rankings don’t put drivers in Washington, D.C., in such a good light. Motorists in that city filed property damage insurance claims around once every five years—about twice the rate of the average motorist.
The company also analyzed crash likelihood among larger cities with populations of more than one million.
In that category, Phoenix topped the list for the seventh consecutive year, with drivers experiencing a crash every 10.1 years on average, which was only 1.1 percent worse than the national average.
The number of motor vehicle crashes has decreased nationally in recent years, falling to roughly 5.5 million in 2009 from more than 5.8 million the previous year.

Even in the cities with the fewest accidents, driver error remained the leading cause of crashes, Allstate officials said.
The company provided some pointers for motorists on how to cut down on their chances of crashing:
--Don’t talk on your cell phone, text message, change the radio station or engage in any other distracted driving behaviors.
--Pay attention to road conditions, including snow, rain and ice.
--Maintain at least one car length of space between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you for every 10 mph of speed.
--Keep your car in good mechanical shape.
