NY Residents Urged to File Home and Auto Insurance Claims Promptly

Regulators in the Empire State say they've set up hotlines and sent mobile units to hard hit areas to help residents deal with damage from Hurricane Irene.

(EMAILWIRE.COM, September 01, 2011 ) New York, NY -- New York residents whose homes or vehicles have been damaged by Hurricane Irene or its aftermath should waste no time in filing claims with their coverage providers, state officials are advising.

Benjamin Lawsky, superintendent of the state financial services department, said regulators are doing all they can to help consumers get back on their feet, and initiating claims on their low cost auto insurance policies will help with that process.

“The purpose of (coverage) is to help people rebuild, and we will be working to see that process goes as smoothly as possible,” Lawsky said in a statement.

New York officials have set up a disaster hotline to field calls from the public and sent the state insurance department’s mobile unit to hard-hit locations to help consumers, among other steps taken in the wake of the storm.

Authorities estimate that at least 40 people in a dozen states along the East Coast were killed as a result of the hurricane that struck over the weekend. And while authorities have not yet been able to put a figure on total damages, the Insurance Information Institute projects they could climb as high as $5 billion.

Local, state and federal officials continue to help residents deal with the fallout.

President Obama has signed emergency declarations for New York, 11 other states and the District of Columbia, freeing up federal funding to protect public safety and private property.

Lawsky and other New York leaders are urging residents of that state to contact their coverage providers right away, in order to ensure they meet any deadline for filing a claim.

State Farm announced Tuesday it had received more than 7,500 claims from its policyholders in New York, with more than 800 for auto coverage and nearly 6,700 stemming from damage to homes.

The state was second in terms of losses only to neighboring New Jersey, which has seen a combined total of nearly 8,100 homeowner and auto policy claims from State Farm customers.
