Auto Insurance Regulators Recover Millions for Policyholders
Insurance regulators around the country are reporting the amounts they've reclaimed for policyholders in the first half of 2011.
(EMAILWIRE.COM, August 09, 2011 ) Georgia Insurance Commissioner Ralph T. Hudgens has announced that his department recovered more than $6 million for consumers in the first six months of 2011.
The recouped funds are the product of regulators helping to resolve thousands of disputes between policyholders and providers of cheap car insurance and other coverage.
The Peach State is the latest to highlight its work in helping consumers work out issues with their providers and collecting funds that they might never have seen otherwise. State regulators across the nation have recovered tens of millions of dollars for consumers so far this year and have resolved thousands of claim disputes.
In other announcements regarding the first half of 2011:
--Nevada regulators recovered nearly $1.8 million for policyholders. That total was not broken down by coverage type, but consumer complaints about auto policies were down slightly from the same period in 2010.
--Connecticut officials got policyholders almost $2.4 million from insurers. Complaints involving auto coverage led to the recovery of more than $180,000.
--Missouri recovered $5.2 million for policyholders in disputes over claims involving tornado damage and other events. Consumers had flooded regulators’ offices with questions about auto, health and homeowner issues, officials said.
--Oklahoma regulators recovered $2.6 million in benefits for consumers. The department received about 2,600 complaint calls per month in that period, officials said.

Recovering money is just one of the services that insurance regulators in all 50 states provide for consumers. Regulatory agencies nationwide oversee coverage providers, help negotiate agreements between companies and policyholders, and track complaints against individual carriers.
Hudgens said the $6.2 million recovered by his department was divided between more than 24,000 consumers and businesses.
He encouraged Georgia residents to contact his department with questions or concerns about life, health, auto or other types of coverage.
“Consumers can call even if they just want their … policy explained or reviewed,” the commissioner said in a statement.
