One late night in July, 2008, floodwaters from the Maquoketa River broke down a wall and blew out seven service bay doors of Smitty’s warehouse. The relentless rain kept water in the building for two days.

When the flood subsided it left a 25-foot deep, water-filled crater in the parking lot. Appliances and TVs were damaged and the store’s custom, solid oak displays were destroyed beyond repair. More than half of the 2,500 tires in stock were missing or ruined.

Despite recurring flooding, owner, Max Boren says he is here to stay. He likes the ideal location and parking. Most importantly, Boren says, “The highest traffic count in the country is right in front of our store. We do not want to move.”
