New Jersey Auto Insurance Regulators Distribute New Report

The report from the Department of Banking and Insurance shows which car insurers had the best and worst track records with consumers last year.

(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 11, 2011 ) Newark, NJ -- New Jersey Manufacturers Group — the company insuring the greatest share of New Jersey vehicles — ended up having the lowest amount of complaints per insured car last year, according to the New Jersey Division of Banking and Insurance (DOBI), making it the best rated auto insurance company in the state for 2010.

The results were included in the latest consumer-complaint ranking report published by the DOBI. The report shows the total number of valid complaints filed against auto coverage providers operating in the state and weighs that number with the number of autos that each company insured at the end of 2010. Only companies insuring at least 10,000 cars were included in the report.

New Jersey drivers may want to reference the latest edition of the report when deciding which coverage providers to go with. The reports can provide insight into a particular company’s consumer satisfaction record. So, if two companies have similar prices but only one has an outstanding consumer-complaint ratio, it might be better to go with the one with the better ratio.

The complaint records of a total of 32 companies insuring 5.24 million cars are reflected in the 2010 edition.

Nine companies, including the New Jersey Manufacturers Group, had zero upheld complaints last year.

The company that came out with the worst record was Personal Service Insurance Co., which had three valid complaints for about 13,600 insured vehicles.

The DOBI defines a valid complaint as one in which “The insurer’s action violated state insurance rules or laws, or the issue in controversy should have been resolved by the insurer without departmental intervention.”
