(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 10, 2011 ) WOFFORD HEIGHTS, CALIF. – The California Department of Water Resources indicated in its April 1st Bulletin 120 Snow Survey the Kern River snowfields had accumulated 184% of “normal” precipitation for the year. Several subsequent storms have reportedly boosted the snow pack to close to 195%. Snow packs of this magnitude usually occur in the Southern Sierra during “El Nino” years. The fact that the 2011 winter was designated a “La Nina” year makes this an unusual event.

Rafting enthusiasts preparing to run the Kern River this summer can expect outstanding water flows on all stretches of the Kern River from May through the middle of September this year. Keith Stephens, general manager of Kern River Outfitters explains, “Our Upper Kern trips are already running and our two day Lower Kern trips begin on May 14th. The Upper Kern is a free flowing stretch of river that will rise as the weather heats up this spring. We expect the Upper to peak somewhere during the first two weeks of June. After the peak, the Upper Kern will present a long run of exceptional water flows through August. The Lower Kern, which is dam controlled, will probably peak somewhere during the same time frame, level off, and offer our guests a wonderful, continuous flow through the middle of September. Our Class V, Forks of the Kern trips will be postponed until June 20th to let the peak flow pass. After that, guests can expect some of the best conditions to run the Forks in a decade.” Stephens adds, “The peak flow period will present some interesting logistical challenges, but the balance of the season will be long and well worth any short term adjustments needed to align operations to accommodate the high water.”
