He said "A client asked about their teenage daughter having a third car accident. The client wanted to know how as a parent to have an influence on guiding the child to better outcomes. Here’s the response:

A parent can force a daughter to study safe driving techniques before driving a car again. Or, give a scolding and revoke all driving privileges altogether. The child could be sent to a driving school and made to personally pay for it. The child could also be made to pay for any increases in insurance premiums incurred. Or, the parent could take the daughter out for ice cream and show love and acceptance.

When a child calls a parent in the early moments after an accident, that child is reaching out to one of the few people on the planet that can offer a feeling of total acceptance, and without any judgment. The biggest thing here is not that the child learns something in this moment, but actually that the parent has a tremendous opportunity for personal growth. The parent is given an amazing opportunity to show the child deep love and compassion. These opportunities are rare, so don’t miss it by focusing on the physical side of things… the damage to the car or the cost in terms of money. If this is handled well, there will be really lovely memories of this event to share with one another.

The daughter is well aware of having made a big mistake, that greater focus is needed when driving, and that there are certain costs associated with having accidents. These concepts are best discussed when the daughter asks and brings it up at a later date.

What the daughter would most like to know in this moment more than anything else is love and acceptance, and a feeling of safety when interacting with the parents and sharing intimate, or embarrassing, life situations. Think about it from the reverse perspective… humans all desire to have someone to go to, to share the most intimate issues and fears and hopes. Humans desire to be seen, listened to, accepted, and loved. If a parent can fulfill this role without any judgment, it is really ideal.

This is a chance to build tremendous trust and love with a daughter in this moment, so go hug and love that child, laugh together, and go get ice cream together!
