White House Subcommittee on Internet Privacy Portends Big Changes for Website Legal Compliance

Leading Internet Attorney Chip Cooper Explains How New Consumer Privacy Regulations Will Impact Online Businesses

(EMAILWIRE.COM, October 29, 2010 ) – Atlanta, GA - The Obama administration just formed a subcommittee consisting of several federal agencies to advise the White House on Internet privacy concerns as well as other issues for the Web. If you operate a website that collects any information regarding your site’s visitors, your Website Legal Compliance obligations are likely to become more complex and burdensome.

“There’s a new sheriff in town”, says Internet attorney and founder of the DigiContracts.com online drafting service Chip Cooper. “For a long time the Web was sort of like the wild, wild, West. That changed with the Obama administration, and the pace of federal regulation of online businesses will continue at an increasing rate”.

“We saw the beginning of stepped-up federal regulation when the Federal Trade Commission announced its Guide Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials late last year. Since then we’ve seen a couple of bills introduced in the House on Internet Privacy – and a Senate bill aimed at post transaction sales and recurring charges”, says Cooper.

Cooper believes one of the objectives of the subcommittee will be to consider how to regulate the collection and sharing of sensitive consumer information such as location, ethnic background, and financial and medical data.

According to Cooper, “The first step in privacy regulation focused on personally identifiable information – any information such as an email address that could identify a person. Now the focus seems to be on sensitive information and how it may be linked to an individual person.”

“Today, more than ever, it’s essential for webmasters to stay on top of legal developments”, says Cooper. Cooper believes he’s solved the dilemma with his bi-monthly, complimentary email newsletter, Website Law Alert. “It’s free, and you can sign up at our DigiContracts.com site.”
