Fire is the biggest disaster threat to families and the number one disaster relief effort by the American Red Cross. According to the National Fire Prevention Association, over 17,000 home fires are caused by clothes dryers in the US each year.

An overheated clothes dryer caused a fire that destroyed a 24-unit apartment building in Chesterfield Twp, MI. The American Red Cross is assisting 9 families consisting of a total of about 30 people, including small children and a pregnant woman. “Dryer fires are most devastating when they occur in apartment buildings where many families’ homes and lives are at risk,” said Mory Matias, owner of Dryer Vent Wizard.

During National Fire Safety Month the American Red Cross is encouraging residents to take steps to minimize the risk of home fires by remembering two key fire safety steps: install smoke alarms and develop a fire escape plan. The Chicago Dryer Vent Cleaning Wizard adds a key point of his own, “Dryer Vent Cleaning is the number one way to prevent dryer fires,” said Matias. “Clothes dryers are one of the most likely appliances to cause a fire.”

They should also create a plan of escape in case they need to leave at a moment’s notice, because during a fire every second counts and being prepared can greatly reduce the affects of these devastating disasters.”
