Health care will continue to need more RN's in executive positions

Health care reform is demanding change in how hospitals, outpatient facilities and home health providers deliver quality, cost effective healthcare. Nurses are successfully stepping into these executive roles, bringing with them a more patient centered id

(EMAILWIRE.COM, August 31, 2010 ) Houston, TX - According to the National Labor Board, “In 2008, 13.2 percent of the nation's registered nurses held either a master's or doctoral degree as their highest educational preparation. The current demand for master's and doctorally prepared nurses for advanced practice, clinical specialties, teaching, and research roles far outstrips the supply.”

One problem in preparing RN’s for the role of a Nurse Executive, is not a shortage of willing nurses, but a shortage in higher education. However, results of a 2009 survey released by American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) notes, “The national movement to advance the Clinical Nurse Leader® (CNL) role gained momentum last year with 7 new CNL programs opening, which brings the total number of programs to 88. Currently, 1,808 students are enrolled in these generalist master’s programs (up 9.6%) and 499 CNLs graduated last year (up 6.9%).”

Health care reform is demanding change in how hospitals, outpatient facilities and home health providers deliver quality, cost effective healthcare. Nurses are successfully stepping into these executive roles, bringing with them a more patient centered ideal and advocacy, as well as an understanding of how to deliver quality healthcare while keeping costs contained. It makes sense, too, as the National Board of Labor Statisitics reports, “Nurses comprise the largest single component of hospital staff, are the primary providers of hospital patient care, and deliver most of the nation's long-term care.”

The American Nurses Association (ANA) in a press release dated Febuary 13, 2007, noted:

"ANA insisted on the required participation of the Chief Nursing Officer on the hospital's governing body. We ensured the mandate that the nurse executive be integrated into the decision making processes of the administration, medical staff, and clinical leaders," said ANA President Rebecca M. Patton, MSN, RN, CNOR. The newly revised element of performance reads that effective immediately, "An identified nurse leader, at the executive level, assumes an active leadership role with the organization's governing body, management, organized medical staff, and clinical leaders in the organization's decision-making structures and processes.”

Becoming a nurse has always allowed tremendous diversification, with areas ranging from pediatric to geriatric care and everything in between. Today, RN’s can add Nurse Executive to the many options available to them as career paths, if they choose.

The healthcare system and the way people are cared for is changing. Nurses are not only meeting the demands of a much more complicated medical world, they are forging a path to a more patient-centric healthcare delivery system.
