The country's current physician shortage will grow more critical in the coming decade. The Council on Physician and Nurse Supply conducted a survey of hospital CEOs in 2009 and found that 95 percent of those hospital executives reported a physician shortage, with an average physician jobs vacancy rate at 11 percent. The Council also predicts that as many as 200,000 physician jobs may go unfilled by 2020.

Locum agencies can specify the specialties in which they are interested (internal medicine, emergency medicine, hospitalists, family practitioners, etc.) and then receive the information only from those types of physicians. It's then up to the agency to contact a doctor to see if he or she is interested in the staffing service's locum jobs.
