With lavender fields in bloom it’s time to celebrate on the Olympic Peninsula

(EMAILWIRE.COM, June 15, 2010 ) PORT ANGELES, Wash. – The scent of lavender has already begun filling the air as Sequim, Washington prepares for the 14th Annual Sequim Lavender Festival July 16th-18th. Nestled between the Olympic Mountains and Olympic National Park, Sequim enjoys a unique “rain shadow” which creates an ideal microclimate for growing lavender, similar to the one found in France’s Provence region.
In addition to meeting local lavender farmers and touring their farms visitors will have plenty of other events to explore during the two day festival. The Sunbonnet Sue Quilt Show, art studio tours and shows and Olympic Theater Arts’ presentation of Shirley Valentine, offer a chance to experience the area’s arts and crafts. Adults and children alike will be captivated during the totem tour and salmon stories on the bay. This Native American cultural event includes tribal carving demonstrations, a traditional salmon dinner and storytelling with proceeds donated to the Dungeness River Audubon Center. Free concerts, a street fair, bird walks and marine cruises provide even more entertainment possibilities.
Not to be missed Olympic Cellars and the Sequim Gazette are sponsoring a decadent seven-course Celebrate Lavender dinner. The meal begins with Olympic Cellars’ own local lavender wine, Melange Nouveau, and ends with lavender scented sponge cake and ice cream topped with fresh berries and candied lavender. Festival tickets are $15 with certain events requiring an additional fee.
