They do not stop bullying because they fail to read the signs that indicate their child has been using aggressive language or behavior."

"Bullying behaviors can appear for many reasons, including but not limited to poor self-esteem, a trauma at home or school, lack of empathy or no outlet for aggression."

"Dr. Thompson outlined the following behaviors that may forecast such outbursts:
• Misguided confidence or arrogance
• Poor treatment to siblings or pets
• Frequent name calling
• Failing grades
• A sudden withdrawal from normal activities, such as avoiding friends or being avoided by friends."

"Children may exhibit only one or all of these warning signs. Thompson said "the negative behaviors are better dealt with immediately than waiting for them to progress into bullying behavior."

"It is important to stay calm and guard against unwittingly reinforcing the harassing behaviors when dealing with your child who is acting the bully.
If you see your child exhibiting the behaviors such as name calling, excessive arrogance or treating his or her friends and siblings badly, use that as an opportunity to dig deeper into the problem."

"Ask questions and don’t stop asking until you are satisfied with the answers. Parents need to clearly state the behaviors that are wrong … and the consequences that will take place if those behaviors continue.”

Dr. Thompson also stated “Great damage is done to the victim, the bully and the bystander when harassment, verbal assault and bullying take place. “

The topic of bullying has been in the public eye recently because of the high profile suicide of a 15-year-old girl, Phoebe Prince, which was attributed to severe harassment. The state of Massachusetts, like many other states, is now considering putting into place tough anti-bullying laws.
