Pirate Hostages threatened by Al Qaeda linked Al Shabbab

(EMAILWIRE.COM, April 26, 2010 ) Miami, Florida – USA - The Committee on Security and Development in Africa, Co-Chair Dr. Mohamed Zayed, stated today that members of the international community must act expeditiously and immediately support the TFG and their unity government partner “Ahlu Sunna Jama” (ASWJ), in an effort to cut off an attempt by Al Qaeda linked Al Shabbab to take possession of pirate hostages which could later be used as a human shields and bargaining chips between the terrorist organizations.
Members of the international community must immediately enhance their support for the counterinsurgency efforts with specific attention to an issue which have alarmed security experts and threatens to prolong the already divisive security situation in Somalia.
Recent reports from US based security contractor, Phoenix Intelligence Support Inc. who signed agreements last year with TFG and recently with their unity government partner Ahlu Sunna Jama, (for capacity building and National Security Support) report that the Al Qaeda linked Al Shabbab have made their way to the Central Galmudug state region of Somalia which contains most of the pirate ships and hostages in an effort to bolster their defenses and create additional instability in the country; Information received early today indicates that the group has already reached as far as the area of Haradere in south central Somalia.
Further, the Committee which is comprised of experts in international affairs, politics, long term low intensity urban combat, gorilla/irregular warfare, intelligence support and related security disciplines, all agreed that the situation in Somalia is very delicate and most be taken seriously by the international community in a more proactive manner, so as not to have a situation in the Horn of Africa where the proliferation of Al Qaeda and their linked organizations such as Al Shabbab are allowed to strengthen and proliferate throughout the region and then export terrorism around the globe and especially significant is the fact that Somalia sits on the world’s most important shipping lane thereby threatening global commerce by virtue of its current instability.
Additionally, the Committee calls for an immediate moratorium on a political dissentions within the UN backed Transitional Federal Government of the Somali Republic, as this sort of behavior takes the international community’s intention away from the real issue at hand and places it in an inappropriate manner, on issues such as parliamentary majority and technical aspects of government administration and power sharing which is very much premature at this stage, due to the fact that this is certainly the wrong time (on the eve of counterinsurgency) to waist efforts, time and resources on who will speak for the parliament, when there has yet to be obtained any reasonable instability and security to enable any such parliament to be effective in the first place.
This sort of behavior by opposition forces in the TFG and improper interference from other countries in a divisive way, is very damaging to the credibility of all participants and all wise politicians and participants should call for an immediate moratorium on political dissentions until these successful counterinsurgency efforts have accomplished security in Somalia as then and only then will there be an environment conducive to the operation of any parliament or any real governmental functions.
Lastly, the Committee for Security and Development in Africa which is an organ of the Arab African Initiative NGO and the Middle East Center on International Cooperation, calls for an emergency summit on peace and reconciliation to be convened as soon as possible, as well as for a real tangible support on the ground from international community members including seriously considering the deployment of UN peacekeepers which would be in full compliance of the Djibouti peace accords.
