BOISE, Idaho; March 8, 2010 – Basque culture heavily populates small pockets of the United States. And Idaho is one state that boasts one of the highest numbers of residents of Basque descent. To celebrate the rich culture, every five years, the international Basque community gathers together for culture, cuisine, drinking, dancing and traditional festivities during Jaialdi , an international Basque cultural festival on July 27-31.
Why Idaho? Boise was one of the locations where Basque immigrants first established themselves after coming to the United States from the Basque region of Spain and France. Now, decades later, descendents are joined by people of Basque heritage from all over the world — including Europe, South America and Australia — to celebrate their heritage by partaking in this culture rich festival. Today Boise is home to the Basque Block, a section of town full of Basque restaurants, museums and shops.
Something for Everyone: Time-honored dancing and activities are showcased during the event, including amazing feats of strength like hay-bale throwing, wood chopping and wagon lifting. There will be more than 15 traditional dance groups performing alongside traditional musicians and singers. Booths will also be set up all weekend, selling clothing, souvenirs and other novelties. Activities will be open to people of all ages throughout the weekend.
Don’t Miss Out: The next Jaialdi won’t be for another five years, so now is the time to experience this unique festival. This is the United State’s premier Basque celebratory festival and nothing can compare.
Accommodation and Tickets: The first Jaialdi took place in 1987 and was planned as a one time event. Since then, the festival has taken over the streets of downtown Boise every five years and today more than 35,000 people attend. There are many options for accommodation, visit www.boise.org for information. Tickets for Jaialdi can be purchased online at www.idahotickets.com or http://www.qwestarenaidaho.com.
Getting There: Boise is a short drive from many major cities. It is about eight hours from Seattle, seven hours from Portland and nine hours from Billings, Montana. Many airlines have direct flights to the Boise airport from major cities around the country.
