Coaches, teachers and mentors can teach anti-bullying skills
New Verbal Self Defense program enables educators to teach life-changing skills that deflect verbal abuse and assault.
(EMAILWIRE.COM, April 05, 2010 ) Milwaukee, WI – The Verbal Judo Institute announced a new program for any one who works with children. It is designed to empower them to respond to bullying and harassment by building verbal skills.
Verbal Self Defense for Youth adapts the communications tactics of persuasion used by law enforcement and public safety professionals through Dr. George Thompson’s Verbal Judo Institute.
“When a child is bullied, parents turn to me for answers,” said Chan Lee, a martial arts school owner who worked closely with Dr. Thompson’s team to develop the course. “Until now, I didn’t have answers that were based on what really works. “Now, we’re able to provide them with verbal tactics that are proven on the streets and are defensible in court,” said Lee.
Here are just some of the tips from Verbal Self Defense for Youth:
• Anyone who is the target of verbal harassment – both children and adults – must devise a pre-planned, practiced response before a confrontation takes place,
• The goal is de-escalation, therefore responses must be made without a trace of anger,
• Assaults can be deflected by letting the bully know why it’s in his (or her) best interest to stop. Shielding with words is like blocking a physical punch.
The course has a strong family component, and includes fourteen video lessons and supplementary handout materials designed to promote family discussion on verbal defense strategies. It is geared toward instructors who work with children in extracurricular settings, but can also be modified for school use.
Verbal Self Defense for Youth is credentialed through the Northeast Wisconsin Technical College, an institution well known within the law enforcement community as a leading provider of continuing education.
Bullying has garnered national attention lately, in part because the Massachusetts Legislature has recently passed anti-bullying legislation that, among other things, requires teachers to report episodes of harassment.
“Great damage is done to the victim, the bully and the bystander when harassment, verbal assault and bullying take place,” said Dr. Thompson, who has taught Verbal Judo for 30 years. “Verbal Judo isn’t a theory; it is a practical, proven solution.
“Educators will have a fully equipped toolkit to bully-proof children,” he said, “and will know how to respond to stop bullying immediately.
” The Verbal Judo Institute, founded by Dr. George Thompson in 1983, trains people in all walks of life on conflict resolution via the tactical use of words rather than force. Four books have been written on Verbal Judo and over 700,000 law enforcement professionals have been trained on its methods.
