The Quirky and the Quiant

From Washington to Maine funky festivals are covering the country this summer. Ever seen a town covered in pink plastic flamingos or a cloud of hang-gliders seemingly appear from the heavens? Here’s a few of the summer’s must-see unknowns.

What: Hang-gliders Fly-in- Experience a sight like no other as hundreds of hang-gliders fill the skies above the spectacular Big Horn Mountains. After the skies settle hurry over to the wide open spaces in the foothills of the Big Horn Equestrienne Center to catch up to a 120 youth soccer teams simultaneously competing for the Wyoming State Cup.

Where: Olympic Peninsula, Washington
What: Sequim Lavender Festival- Pretend you’re in Provence as you gaze out over fields of millions of lavender plants. Due to the unique microclimate found in the region, these beautiful buds have turned Sequim into an internationally recognized flower power. During the festival don’t forget to take a culinary tour of the farms and discover how lavender can liven up your cuisine. After traversing the fields take a hop aboard a puffin sunset marine cruise or relax by the Dungeness River with enchanting local wine, delectable food and the Black Diamond Fiddlers.

Where: (EMAIL, Idaho
What: Jaijaldi- This week-long festival celebrates Basque culture and is only held once every 5 years. It was first held 23 years ago in a former Idaho state penitentiary and received over 30,000 visitors! Festival highlights include traditional Oinkari Basque dancers, weightlifting and hay bale throwing shows of strength, strolling musicians and tons of mouthwatering food.
When: July 27- August 1

Where: Yellow Pine, Idaho
What: Harmonica Contest and Festival- Yellow pine is a quiet mountain town touting a population of 40, but each August it transforms into one of the premier harmonica places in the world. With youth, adult and grand champion categories a wide array of performers come and entertain the crowds. Between shows explore the beautiful Idaho backcountry.
