Recent News on Ford
Ford Motor Co. Chief Executive Alan Mulally's pay package rose almost 6% to $17.9 million in 2009, a year in which the auto maker returned to profitability while winning union concessions.

The increase reflects Mr. Mulally's progress in turning around the company and avoiding government bailouts and bankruptcy court, unlike competitors General Motors Co. and Chrysler Group LLC. Ford, of Dearborn, Mich., reported an annual profit of $2.7 billion in 2009, its first in four years.

Mr. Mulally received a 2009 salary of $1.4 million, down 30% from $2 million a year earlier. He took that reduction voluntarily in exchange for cost concessions from union workers.

He received no bonus for 2009, but his stock and option awards grew to $16.5 million from $13.93 million in 2008, according to a filing Monday with the Securities and Exchange Commission. He had other compensation of $491,869 in 2009, down from $1 million in 2008. Mr. Mulally's total 2008 pay package was $16.98 million.

The pay raise came as Ford sought further cost concessions from the United Auto Workers union and paid thousands of its more highly compensated employees to leave their jobs.

"It's an outrage after all the sacrifices we have taken and the pay he gets," said Gary Walkowicz, a bargaining-committee member for UAW Local 600, representing workers at Ford's Dearborn, Mich., truck plant. "His pay is coming out of our concessions."

Ford spokesman John Stoll said Mr. Mulally's compensation "reflects Ford's goal of attracting and retaining a world-class CEO and providing appropriate and competitive performance-based compensation."
