Universal Insurance Holdings, Inc. (AMEX:UVE) shares plunged 14.31% to $5.27 after the company posted fourth-quarter net loss of $2.8 million or $0.07 per share, compared with a net income of $7.2 million or $0.18 per share in the prior year period.
The net loss in the fourth quarter of 2009 was partially offset by $10.6 million of pre-tax realized gains on investments and $0.7 million of pre-tax foreign currency gains on investments.
Total premiums earned and other revenues for the quarter increased to $53.99 million from $45.51 million in the same quarter last year.
BioTime, Inc. (AMEX:BTIM) fell 5.70% to $7.00 on heavy volume after rising about 28% yesterday. Yesterday, it announced the publication of a scientific paper titled “Spontaneous Reversal of Developmental Aging in Normal Human Cells Following Transcriptional Reprogramming.” The article was released online today in the peer-reviewed journal Regenerative Medicine in advance of the print publication. The demonstration that the aging of human cells can be reversed may have significant implications for the development of new classes of cell-based therapies targeting age-related degenerative disease.
